Bringing the Prairie to the Big Screen by: Bailey Hauf

T

here is a bare expanse for miles, green grasses and wildflowers scatter the horizon. A white farmhouse and an old pick-up truck are the only manmade structures within sight. Yellow, orange, and gold hues ricochet off the beautiful fields as the sunsets beneath the North Dakota landscape. A rather typical view for anyone living in New Salem, but not what one would generally expect to see on the big screen. Yet, the Grand Theaters in Bismarck premiered Daniel Bielinski and Marek Ryszard Dojs’s North Dakota written and filmed short, "You Beautiful Crazy Blind Cripple." “The intention with the movie is to generate a thriving film making scene here in Bismarck and in North Dakota,” Bielinski said. Bielinski, originally from Wisconsin, was pulled from New York where he lived and acted to become the director of the theater program at the University of Mary. When he moved to Bismarck he was unwilling to give up his passions and was determined to find a way to produce Hollywood quality films here in North Dakota. “Essentially, there is no narrative film making in North Dakota, which was something that I Photo by Glasser Images
